The American tenor, Douglas Nasrawi, began his musical and stage training in the San Francisco area and continued his studies in Paris, where he began his professional career.
Thereafter, Douglas Nasrawi was to be heard in many European opera houses. He sang the Count Almaviva in the world premiere of José-Ramón Encinar’s Figaro at the Teatro Lírico Nacional La Zarzuela, Madrid, (later broadcast on Spanish television) and, in 1991, the title role of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito in Lille, under Jean-Claude Malgoire. He performed the role of Oronte in Georg Frideric Handel’s Almira in Bremen (CD recording by CPO), and Charles Chaynes’ Jocaste (CD recording MFA) at the Rouen Opéra, under Frédéric Chaslin. In 1996 and 1997 he appeared at the Netherlands Opera in Monteverdi’s Orfeo.
Douglas Nasrawi sang the title role in Francesco Pennisi’s Tristan at the Venice Biennale and at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. From 1995 to 1997, Douglas Nasrawi was a member of the Palatinate Theatre, Kaiserslautern, where his roles included Walther von der Vogelweide, Ferrando, Ismael, Prince Pao in Zemlinsky’s Der Kreidekreis, the Italian singer in Der Rosenkavalier, Don José, and Erik. From 1997 to 1999 he was a member of the Baden State Opera, Karlsruhe.
Most recently Douglas Nasrawi has performed in the opera houses of Dresden Semper Oper (Don José, Carmen), Vienna State Opera (Tamino, Magic Flute), Amsterdam (Edrisi, Król Roger), Karlsruhe (Roméo, Roméo et Juliette), Frankfurt (Narraboth, Salome) and at the Bregenz Festival (Carlson, Of Mice and Men). He has also previously sung the roles of Panait (Martinu’s Greek Passion), Flaminio (L’Amore dei tre re) at the Bregenz Festival, Lancelot (Le Roi Arthus) at the Bregenz Festival and at the Cologne Opera House (recorded by Koch/Schwann) and Alfredo (La Traviata), Rodolfo (La Bohème) and Chlestakow (Der Revisor) in Augsburg. A CD recording of Der Revisor has recently been released on the Arte Nova label. Other roles in Douglas Nasrawi’s repertoire to date include Laerte (Hamlet), MacDuff (Macbeth), Grimoaldo (Rodelinda), Des Grieux (Manon), Erik (Der fliegende Holländer), Don José (Carmen), Pollione (Norma), Gérald (Lakmé), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) to name a few.
Future plans include the title roles in Peter Grimes at the Komische Oper Berlin and Zemlinky’s Der Zwerg at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Lancelot in Chausson's Le Roi Arthus in Brussels, Karl in Tchaikovsky's Maid of Orleans at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Tokyo, Tom in Igor Stravinsky's Rake's Progress and Don José in Carmen at the Semper Oper Dresden, the Schoolmaster in Janacek's Cunning Little Vixen in Geneva, and concerts with the Bonn Hallé Orchestra and at Radio France.
