Biography

Miriam Gauci was born on 3rd April 1958 and has since become the most successful Maltese soprano, enjoying an international career and reputation. She started her studies with her aunt, soprano Hilda Tabone, who early recognized her talent. She persued her studies at Milan's Conservatorio Verdi where she obtained her Diploma di Canto and at the Centro Perfezionamento Artisti Lirici del Teatro Alla Scala di Milano, where she obtained a special diploma.

She won many international voice competitions such as Teatro Alla Scala (Milan), Toti Del Monte (Treviso) and Auriliano Pertile (Bologna). She has sung at the teatri comunali of Firenze and Bologna, San Carlo of Naples and Bellini of Catania; The state opera theatres of Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, Dresden's Semper-Oper, and Berlin's Deutsche-Oper, at the Vienna Staatsoper, The Bastille of Paris, The Capitole of Toulouse, The Lieu of Barcelone, The Teatro de la Zarzuela (Madrid); The national opera houses of Geneva and Zurich, and in highly acclaimed special performances of "Carmen" at London's Earl's Court, which is on commercial video. She has also performed in Chile at the Teatro Municipal of Santiago, at the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico, USA, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, Los Angeles.

Her repertoire includes leading roles in Verdi's "La Traviata", "Simon Boccanegra", "Otello", "Don Carlo", and "Requiem" and her Puccini roles have been of great distinction, namely in "La Boheme", "Manon Lescaut" and "Madam Butterfly". She has also interpreted works by Giordano, Poulenc, Catalani, Leoncavallo, Dvorak, Boito, and many others. She has sung opposite celebrities like tenors Placido Domingo, Giacomo Aragall, Peter Dvorsky, and Francisco Araiza and collaborated with conductors such as Gavazzeni, Varvisi, Mehta, Pretre, Muti, Abbado and Sawallisch. She has made several CD recordings for Naxos and Discover International.

In 1993, she was conferred with the membership of Malta's National Order of Merit by President Tabone. She is married to conductor / pianist Michael Laus and they have a daughter.
